Known as the "Heart of Dixie", Alabama's first European settlement (founded by the French in 1702) was Mobile (the state's only saltwater port). Fertile lands encouraged settlers to establish cotton plantations in the early 19th century, which became the basis of the state's economy until WWII. These days of course, Alabama is no longer dependent on agriculture, with diverse economic interests that include banking, aerospace, health care and education as well as car manufacturers and other heavy industries.
